A big party was being held at the house. The guests had gathered, the tables were full of food, and the hosts were busy entertaining everyone.
The young maid was constantly helping out in the kitchen, clearing away the plates, washing the dishes, and making sure everything was in order. She was very modest and hardly participated in the guests’ conversations.
Most of the guests didn’t even care who she was. To them, she was just another employee.
As the evening progressed, a small awkward situation arose in the kitchen. A drink spilled from a glass and soaked the maid’s apron. There was a moment of silence in the room.
At that moment, the husband of the house entered.
He looked at the guests, then at the maid.
After a few seconds, he approached her and slowly took off his apron.
Everyone looked at each other in surprise.
Then the man smiled and said:
— I think it’s time for everyone to know the truth.
It turned out that the young woman was not actually an employee.
She was her husband’s younger sister, who had lived abroad for many years and had recently returned. She did not want the guests to recognize her or to be treated special. That is why she had asked to help with the organization of the evening, like an ordinary employee.
The wife of the house and the family knew about this secret, but none of the guests suspected it.
The people gathered in the kitchen were embarrassed, because they realized that they had spent the entire evening forming an opinion about a person based solely on his clothes and occupation.
However, the young woman did not feel embarrassed.
She simply smiled and said that sometimes it is very useful to see how people treat you when they do not know who you are.
The rest of the evening passed in a completely different atmosphere.
And many of those present that day learned an important lesson: A person’s worth is determined not by their clothes, status, or occupation, but by who they really are.
