After a long day at work, a woman returned home. Her husband greeted her with an unusually serious expression. Usually he was always joking, but that day he seemed to have something important to say.
They had been together for twenty years. During that time, they had overcome many difficulties together, raised children, and built a strong family.
The man sat down at the table and told her that he had been keeping a secret for twenty years.
At first, the woman thought it was a joke, but his face was completely serious.
A few seconds later, the man placed a sealed envelope on the table.
He asked her to open it only when she left the room.
The woman became more and more worried.
When her husband left, she immediately opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter and some old documents.
The letter said that during the first year of their marriage, the man had secretly started saving money. Over the years, he had given up many personal desires and had saved the money for a special purpose.
The documents showed that he had been making payments on a house for many years. But the most surprising thing was at the end. The house was registered in his wife’s name. The last lines of the letter read:
“If anything ever happens to me, I want to make sure that you will always have a place that is yours. I just didn’t want you to know about this until it was completely over.” Tears welled up in the woman’s eyes. They weren’t tears of sadness.
She realized that the man who had lived with her for years had secretly thought about her future and her safety.
When her husband returned to the room, the woman said nothing.
He simply hugged her.
